Northwest Nationals Welcomes New Coaches to Club

Northwest Nationals is proud to welcome the following coaches into our club for the 2006-07 season.

GI11 Red Ben Somoza ESA / University of Washington/Seattle Sounders 2006 will be Ben's first season as a Head Coach. 2005 he assisted Tami Bennett coaching NWN Fusion. Somoza played a large role in helping the team become the 2004 Western Conference Champions with two goals and two assists. He returns to the Sounders for his third season. As a Husky, Somoza led his team in points with 17 in his senior season with five goals and seven assists. In his final two collegiate seasons he scored a combined 11 goals. Somoza was named to the All Pac-10 team in both his junior and senior seasons. After graduation, Somoza was drafted in the second round of the 2002 A-League Draft by the Portland Timbers.
GU11 White Shannon Lovejoy Seattle Pacific University 2006 is Shannon's first year as head coach of a NWN team. Last year she assisted Mark Metzger with the GU11 Blue team helping lead them to a second round game in the State Cup. SEATTLE (Jan. 4) ­ Shannon Lovejoy of Seattle Pacific University has been voted the NSCAA/adidas National Player of the Year for NCAA Division II women's soccer. Lovejoy (Sr., Seattle, Wa./Seattle Prep), a three-time All-American midfielder, scored eight goals and added nine assists as the Falcons (20-1-4) reached the NCAA championship game. She scored the clinching penalty kick in a tiebreaker during the quarterfinal round of the playoffs and added a goal in the semifinal win. SPU was defeated by Nebraska Omaha in overtime, 2-1, in the title game. Over her career, Lovejoy set virtually every Seattle Pacific single-game, season and career scoring record. She is also the Great Northwest Athletic Conference career points leader. In her final season Lovejoy was voted all-conference, all-region and first team All-American. Her player of the year award was voted upon by National Soccer Coaches Association of America members at Div. II programs throughout the nation.

BU13 Real Brian Guiney Snohomish United Brian grew up in England, and played competitively, including the U-18 London team, and 2 years for Brunel University. In addition, he holds a UEFA "B" coaching license, has First Aid and Child Protection training, and a UK referees badge. Coach Brian has trained teams at Snohomish United, and has coaching experience that includes Snohomish GU-14, Challenger Sports CCT for 3 years, Brunel University Reserve Team Coach, and West Ham Youth Team.
