Arguably, the biggest upset of the 2007 WSYSA Tournament so far happened on 2/24 with Northwest Nationals G94 Blue beating Crossfire Porter (defending state champs) 1-0. The game started strong with the NWN girls keeping a lot of pressure on Crossfire, and keeping on the attack. At about the 13 minute mark, NWN Blue set up a beautiful passing sequence from Erin Russell to Sara Ungvarsky to Cali Crisler, who then sent a cross to Salina Saucedo. She controlled the ball well and sent a shot past the goalie for the lead, and only score of the game. After a few near misses and a couple of corner kicks for both sides it was half time.
Second half Crossfire came out strong. But much credit to the mighty NWN Blue who turned it up a notch themselves. NWN Blue continued and battled until the very end. Crossfire was really pressing the last 10-15 minutes and had some close calls but special kudos to the NWN goalkeeper who was on fire, and just wasn’t going to let anything get into her net!! A special prayer for our center mid Julia Whatley who went down with a dislocated knee part way through the first half, and will miss the rest of the Cup.
Now on to Quarter Finals against Dosveedanya Red!! GO BLUE!!!
