COCOA, FLORIDA – One morning session, 8:00 AM to noon, was all these ’91-’93 boys had left to impress the attending scouts and coaches and earn a position on one of the three Super Y-League Select Teams being assembled at the Cocoa Expo Center today in eastern Florida. The unique, talent rich Super Y-League Select Team for the ’91 and ’93 age divisions was released. The ’92 team will be published tomorrow.
“Across the board, the Super Y-League ODP Camp was better this year,” said BW Rhode Island Coach Scott Cannon. “I think the fact that this camp has placed guys in U.S. U17 Residency Camp the past few years helped open Juan Carlos [Michia] and Raul [Diaz Arce] to our system. Where in the past they were a little hesitant, they were much more keen on getting into the process of selecting players this time around.”
A high scoring affair on the Cocoa Expo Center’s Italy field revealed several obvious choices for the 2007 Super Y-League ‘91 Select Team.
“Every player here was top-notch,” said Northern Virginia Royals outside midfielder Uwem Etuk following his selection to the ’91 Select Team. “There were some college scouts around and it was great to see the National Team Staff watching my games. It makes you nervous, knowing they are watching, but as I get older I realize you have to be at your best every time out.”
“The competition is a lot faster in the Super Y-League,” said Deion Jones. “You see a lot of great teams you cannot play anywhere else.”
“I made the Super Y-League Select Team last season,” added Jones. “I went on the trip to Switzerland. It was something I will never forget.”
